Bangladesh National Football Team represents the country. It is governed by Bangladesh Football Federation. It is a member of AFC. The Team is yet to achieve the quality to take part in the World Cup. They could join Asia Cup only once in 1980 and they had to leave the tournament from the first round. Like other countries of the sub-continent, the popularity of football has been decreased because of the increasing popularity of cricket. After the liberation, the team had been formed in the year 1972 and it obtained the membership of FIFA in the year 1974.

Bangladesh National Football Team took part in the selection stage of World Cup in 1986, but could keep their victory as they were defeated by Indonesia and Thailand. In the Asia Cup, Bangladesh could not achieve much.

Yet under Vision Asia Project Bangladesh is trying to develop the standard of its football. Steps have been taken for arranging different leagues and tournaments. The steps are viewed as appropriate.

Still football is a popular game. In 2003, Bangladesh National became Champion in South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) cup. Bangladesh won after defeating Maldives in front 50,000 spectators. Bangladesh also defeated India in the semifinal round. People of Bangladesh believe that this victory will work as a source of inspiration for further success.

Kazi Salahuddin is a renowned footballer of Bangladesh and he is the first Bangladeshi player who played in the professional league in Hong Kong.

The most memorable incident in the history of Bangladesh is the visit of world famous star footballer Jinedain Jidan.
