Culture is the glimpse of social structure. The cultural picture of Jessore is very clear and non-sectarian. Therefore, based on general premise of culture, Jessore can be called the London of east. In 1928, Jessore Institute and Bishwanath (B-Sarker) revolving theatre was established in Jessore. In Bangladesh, this is the bearer of ancient, medieval and modern culture. The founder of Jessore Institute and Bishwanath (B-Sarker) revolving theatre is Abinash Sarkar, a famous lawyer of jessore. In the 1930-40s, the Jessore Institute was the heart of the culture of Jessore and at that time there was no cultural programs that used to held in the open sky like todays. All the family centric ceremonies used to held in B-sarkar hall. The notable bright faces of that time were Shree Sankar Ghoshal, Shree Santos Ghosal, Shree Subodh Roy, Shree Sukumar Sen, Shree Anandamohon, Shree Pabitra Das. Even in that time a cultural practice, in name of ‘Sahitto Songho', was there at the house of Shree Abolakanto Mojumdar. A gathering of literature and music used to sit here in a fix day of every week. The then famous poets, litterateurs, dramatists, musicians used to assemble in this gathering. A pleasing environment used to create by the presence of cultural personalities like Shree Mono Basu, Poet Jasim Uddin, Shree Dhiraj Vottoracarjo, Shree Nimai Vottacarjo, Shree Bonani Chowdhury, Shree Sankar Ghishal. Businessmen Shree Sudhir Ghos and Shree Gopal Ghos, two brother from Bejpara of Jessore, served for cultural welfare. The daughters of Ghos family, Bithika Ghos, Juthika Ghos, Sulta Ghos, Shila Ghos, Shila Ghos, Ila Ghos, used to fascinate the listeners. Painter S. M. Sultan was a high class musical artist. With flute, he used to create sensational tunes which used to mesmerise the audiences. He was good at playing Tabla too. Shah Md. Golam Morshed, the current principal of ‘Sur Bitan', used to come and sing in the musical gathering regularly.
Jessore Institute plays an important role in the blooming of the culture of Jessore before and after the partition of India. Many personalities of music and drama from this institute have been a part and parcel of the history of drama and music of the subcontinent. Late Pronob Ghos, the founder of Michael Arkesta, and Shree Ardhendu Banerjee, principal of Suroddhoni, are notable. After the partition of 1947, a void is felt in the premise of culture. The two families of Shree Rojot Ghosh and Shree Anil Chatargee from Bejpara were the two favourite families in the field of music. Tulsi Ghosh, the brother of Rojot Ghosh, was a popular myhjsjdjdjdelodious vocal. The family of Bhattacharya and the family of Banerjee in Chacra are the renowned family in musical arena. Josna Khatun, the daughter of Mr. Sobahan Mokter, comes forward in public as the first muslim musical artist. Majeda khatun emerges after that.
In 1952 Surbitan Sangit Academy emerges as one of the citable cultural organisations in Jessore. Founding music teacher was Gogal Conddro Goswami. Even though the academy looked unattractive from outside for its vague and ordinary look in the light of harican, many well-known musicians from home and abroad used to come to this historical academy. Among them Ostad Munsi Roich Uddin, Shree Jotin Voumik, Shree Sonkor Ghoshal, Shree Sotten Ghoshal, Shree kanai Bottacarjjo, Ostad Moktar Ali, Ostad Nijam Uddin, Shree Gour Gopal Halder, Shree Kalipod Sarker, Shree Susil Sorker, Painter S M Sultan, Ostad Mosarrof Hossain and many other renowned vocals, composers, lyricists, dance artists notable.
In the liberation war, the contributions of the musicians of jessore cannot be overlooked. The chief assistant of the composer Altaf Mahmud, composer of the song “Amar vayer rokte ranggano akuse February”, was Sayed Hafizur Rahman who is from jessore. Sayed Hafizur Rahman was brutally killed in the wartime by the Pakistani army for his support for the independence of Bangladesh. Songscriti Squad was formed to in Kalkata to inspire the liberation war. Babu Gour Gopal Halder, well-known musical artist of Jessore, was one of the members of this squad. In the initial part of the liberation war in 1971, he inspired and gave courage to the leaders and members who joined the procession of patriotic song which was composed by Shah Md. Morshed.
The cultural premise of Jessore retains its pace after the independence. Cultural conference used to held with artists of the grater Jessore. Currently Suroddhini, Kingsuk, Cader Hat, Sorolipi, Sorogom, Suranjoli, Surotirtho, Shisu Academy are playing even better role to uplift the cultural world. Udichi is another unforgettable name in the cultural sector of Jessore. They have firm steps in the cultural premise. The tragedy of Jessore Udichi in 1999 is still fresh in the nation’s memory.
