Cotton Farm

Cotton farm of Chowgacha Upazilla is one of the most significant organizations working in Jessore. M. Moniruzzaman of Jagadishpur has founded this organization in 1980. This farm is a joint venture of government of Bangladesh and European Union.

Why this farm has been established:

Three –fourth of the total cotton production are produced in Jessore, Jhinaidah, Chuadanga and Kustia area. The main target of this Cotton Farm is to invent highly productive variety of cotton species appropriate for local weather, to invent effective pest control measures, to research on technological advancement in cotton farming and to supply quality cotton seeds to meet the demands of the cotton farmers along with providing necessary training to the field level officers and root level farmers to capacitate them in modern farming.

Training programs:

Training plays a very important role in skill development. To train up root level cotton farmers, there is a dormitory here with accommodation facility for 120 people. 4 days long residential training is arranged here twice in a year for the cotton planters of nearby areas. There is arrangement to provide loan to the farmers through coordination with Cotton Development Board. There is also arrangement for staff training here.

For nearly three decades, this organization is working relentlessly for the development of the cotton farmers. Still there are some predicaments. M. M. Abed Ali, the only scientific officer working here said, “There is ample scope of research in this establishment for at least 20/25 scientists. But sadly only one scientist is currently working here.” He also added,” We have acute human resource shortage. If we get enough manpower, our work will speed up and effective research will be conducted here.”

New invention of this Center:

Cotton Research Institute of Jagadishpur has invented advanced variety of cotton plant, CB-5. This highbred variety has more fiber percentage and better self-preservation against pests. Another highbred variety of cotton is now also in final stage as a testimony of the relentless effort of the scientists and field workers of this centre. Moreover the optimum usage of fertilizer in cotton plantation has also been invented from here.

But for more success in cotton research, human resource recruitment is the most necessary precondition here. There is no boundary wall in this organization. Cattles can easily enter here and create mayhem in the research farm.
